Decorate Nursery Walls with Baby Talk

Peter McNeel
Teddy bears, leaping sheep, stacks of alphabet blocks, butterfly wall art, painted metal wall art and other cutsie wall art may leave you a little bored when it´s time to choose a theme for the baby´s nursery. While there are lots of traditional themes for nursery decor, they may seem a little too predictable to many modern parents. Instead of doing something that´s been done a million times before, why not create an unexpected and personalized décor with baby talk?

You can find letter stencils at a craft store or you can create your own with from a sheet of acetate. Consider the message and whether you are designing for a girl or boy when choosing lettering style. Choose a paint color for the stenciling that coordinates with bedding, accents and wall art, or introduce a contrasting hue that provides accent color for the nursery.

From the Mouths of Babes

Adorable little baby sounds like "goo goo" and "gah gah" are music to parents´ ears. Stencil the word on a wall or as a border about two-thirds of the way up the wall all the way around the room. While words like "blurb", "agh" and "baba" don´t make a whole lot of sense, they will make you smile.

The Tech-Savvy Tot

Your baby won´t be texting on a cell phone anytime soon, but young tech-savvy parent´s would love a tongue-in-cheek play on texting. You can find texting lingo on everything from baby bibs to overalls and you can take the same approach when stenciling baby´s room. Choose a plain letter style that mimics cell phone text lettering and think up fun text messages that you´re baby might send: "Ih8pz" (I hate peas), "COL" (Crying Out Loud) and other baby text messages are a fun and modern way to decorate baby´s nursery.

Baby´s Name

Your baby´s name is the ultimate way to personalize the nursery. Letters can be chosen in bold block letters for a boy or soft scrolling letters for a girl. You can create a focal wall with lettering and include the baby´s name, initials, and nicknames or other versions of the name arranged in an attractive way. Or, you can include the full name and accent with a monogram. You can also create letters that look like animals, toys, flowers or any object. If you have artistic ability you could even paint a stork delivering letters on the wall.

Meaningful Messages

You may have had a certain saying or phrase that was shared between the parents or family members while waiting for the baby to arrive. It might be a prayer, a whimsical expression or a promise to love and protect your baby. You can also choose words that hold your hopes for the baby´s future or words that tie in with themes and images used in the room. Whatever it is, if it is special to the parents and baby, express it on the walls as a beautiful stencil.
