Annie's Red Hot 'Story Of Stuff' Book Will Soon Be In a Bookstore Near You! Buy me one, please!
Dear Joseph,
March 9th is the official launch date for The 'Story of Stuff' book! While I seldom urge people to buy something, I'm writing today to ask you to buy The Story of Stuff. Here's why:
I made The Story of Stuff film to shine a light on the hidden environmental and social impacts of the way we make, use and throw away our Stuff. The response, as you know, has been remarkable, with over 8 million on-line views and counting.
Over the past two years, I've also received tens of thousands of emails in response to the film, folks requesting more information or detail or, asking me about important issues I left out. Really, it was your questions, requests, reminders and critiques that inspired me to write this book.
In it, I share a journey both personal and material. While exploring where our t-shirts, laptops and books come from, I also share my own journey, including how I became so fascinated with garbage! Along the way, I visit Nigerians resisting oil extraction, garment workers toiling in Haiti's sweatshops, Zero Waste activists in the U.S. and many more.
I also tell the stories of real people working to make real change - everything from inventing safer, green chemicals to designing communities that support environmental and social wellbeing. There's even a list of policies and practices that each of us can start working on right now.
I'm new to book publishing, and I've learned that a book's reception during its first week has a huge impact. High advance sales will increase the likelihood that bookstores order and display the book and that its message gets covered in the news media. I know from the success of our film that making a big splash with the book means many more people's hearts and minds will be opened to the The Story of Stuff.
If you agree that's an important goal, please buy a copy of the book for yourself and then pass it on to friends. If you can, buy one for your library, school or church too. Or get some friends together and send copies to your mayor, the city council, or Members of Congress - anyone in a position to help correct the way we're running this beautiful planet - along with a letter telling them what you'd like to see them do differently.
And please check the book tour schedule for stops in your town. I'd love to meet you in person.
The community that has grown up around our little film has been a source of constant inspiration for me. Thank you in advance for your continued generous support!
With profound gratitude,
Annie Leonard
