The original park with an actual field and play equipment in Lakeway is Dragon Park. I used to take my kids there in the early 1990´s. However, Dragon Park was small and Lakeway was growing. So the city decided to develop a larger park on Lake Travis.
There are two parts of Lakeway City Park. By the entrance, off Hurst Creek Road, is a large parking area, a covered pavilion with picnic tables, grills, bathrooms and a play area for small children. The park has a trail system running through it for joggers, bikers and walkers. Some of the trail system is paved and some is primitive. The trails will take you from the upper area to the lower part of the park or you can drive down.
On the way to the lower part of the park you will see a fenced in dog park to the left and a basketball court to the right. At the lower end of the park, which is on Lake Travis across from Hurst Harbor Marina, is more parking. There is a nice area shaded by huge oak trees with picnic tables and grills. Just beyond that is a volleyball court and a sandy beach. As the level of Lake Travis fluctuates, the sandy area will be a patch of sand at times, an actual beach at other times and under water when the lake is high.
On the opposite side of the picnic area is another children´s play area. Beyond that, the paved trail takes you by the cliffs that drop into Lake Travis and then to Petanque courts. Petanque quipment can be checked out at City Hall.
On Independence Day, the Lakeway City Park is home to a really fun 4th of July celebration. Part of a day-long celebration that begins at 8:30 with a parade through Lakeway, the event in the park kicks off at 6:30 PM. Parking is limited at the park, so shuttle busses run from the Lakeway Activity Center. There is usually music by a group like the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble, various choirs and then the finale is a fireworks show that starts at 9:30.
The Lakeway City Park is also home to movies in the park during summer months. Being shown every two weeks, the last movie of the summer of 2008 was on August 23, when National Treasure: Book of Secrets was shown. Movies in the park is a lot of fun. You can take an ice chest, blankets or chairs and just hang out and enjoy the movie while visiting with friends.
